Ideally, you would have taken measures to prepare your home for the cold winter months back in October, but there are some who got caught up in enjoying the last few days of seasonably warm weather or current events. Now! With a quick change of the weather, and the holidays quickly approaching, it feels like a great time to review a few housekeeping items to help us ensure our home is properly winterized and ready for the cold snowy season ahead.
These are our 10 simple tips to help you better prepare your home for winter 2020!
- There's still time to safely check your roof and remove excess debris before the snowfall becomes too thick and heavy.
- Clear out your gutters and downspouts from debris as well.
- Check your heating and ventilation. Be sure the furnace is tuned up and running proficiently. Change air filters if needed.
- Insulate exposed plumbing in the home; especially the basement areas.
- Check your windows and doors for drafts. Using a candle and watching the flame can tell you if there's a draft. Use weather stripping or caulk to seal problem areas.
- Remove leaves and debris from your walkways and around the air conditioner unit, and make sure to cover it up.
- Reverse the direction of your ceiling fan (or flip the fan blades over) to push the warm air down and keep heating costs down.
- Make sure your fireplace is ready. Your flues should be professionally cleaned of debris and any built-up soot.
- Close off unused rooms in your home and their vents. No need heating rooms that will be unoccupied unless it's imperative to keep water pipes in that room from freezing.
- Cover up young shrubs and plants that could get winter burned. Trim back extra long branches that may be hanging over driveways or sidewalks.
These are just a few of the tips we recommend.
